A better ELN won't solve your problems
In my last blog post, I argued that a biotech organization needs shared mental models in order to design and maintain a cycle of information flow between the digital and wet labs. My new post explores the first leg of this cycle: How data and metadata get from the wet lab into an analysis-ready form. Here are the highlights:
When different teams are collecting data and doing the analysis, collecting metadata is much more important than in the older mode where the same person is doing both.
ELNs and LIMS were designed to solve specific problems that were big issues in the past, but they don’t address sharing metadata across teams.
The software needed to solve this problem is still in the first stage of enterprise software.
