A new(ish) Scaling Biotech
After the brief hiatus I announced in March, I've decided to make some changes to this newsletter that I think will make it more interesting both for readers and for me. This post will briefly describe them, then the first post in the new format will go out tomorrow.
Going forward, I will continue to analyze and explain what I see, digging into the what and why that often gets overlooked elsewhere. But what I'm digging into will change in three minor ways:
First, I'm going to expand my scope from drug discovery biotech to life science more broadly. This will happen over time as I learn about the other corners of life science.
Second, I'm going to focus more on the life science software/SaaS industry, rather than how data teams in biotech work. I'll try to keep it interesting for readers on biotech data teams, but I’ll primarily be writing for readers writing, designing and/or selling software for life science.
Third, rather writing general observations like I have in the past, I'm going to start covering recent news and announcements, using them to highlight and explain emerging trends and the mechanics of the industry. My model for this format is Matt Levine's newsletter, but we’ll see if I can pull it off. On weeks where I can't find anything in the news, I'll write about trends, categories of tools, or possibly profiles of individual companies/tools. (I’m still figuring out what this will look like…)
I think this is what makes the most sense both for me and for Scaling Biotech. But it’s also uncharted territory for me, and I’ll probably need help finding the most interesting news, announcements and trends to write about. If there's something you think I should cover (even if it's self promotion) send me an email at scalingbiotech@substack.com. I can't promise I'll use every suggestion but I'll try.
Thanks for reading Scaling Biotech! When I'm not writing this newsletter, I help Life Science SaaS companies build sales and marketing systems tuned to the specific needs of a complex industry.
